This seems worth passing along--the conference itself sounds quite interesting, and from personal experience I can say that Dr. Sun does a very good job at organising events.

Locality, Translocality, and De-Locality:
Cultural, Aesthetic, and Political Dynamics of Chinese-Language Cinema
Call for Papers
Shanghai, China
July 12 ???E13, 2008
In recent years, the merging of people, resources, and expertise from the
three regions of China (mainland, Hong Kong, and Taiwan) and beyond has
ushered in a new era for the development of a more international-based
???Chinese-language cinema.???EEchoing this remarkable change, studies of
???Chinese-language cinema???Ehas also gained its momentum amongst scholars
from mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and beyond. To examine the history
of ???Chinese-language cinema???Eand explore its new directions, to nourish
the creative power of ???Chinese-language cinema,???Eand to enhance the
creative and scholarly cooperation and exchange among all concerned
parties, Shanghai University???s School of Film & TV will hold ???Locality,
Translocality, and De-Locality: Cultural, Aesthetic, and Political
Dynamics of Chinese-Language Cinema???Econference in Shanghai, China.
As a working concept, ???Chinese-language cinema???Ehas its limits and
controversies, but it is exactly because of its polemical nature that this
concept, at least from the organizers???Epoint of view, offers us a fertile
ground for debates and exchanges. The main goal of the conference is to
facilitate a healthy debate on ???Chinese-language cinema???Efrom multiple
angles, with different approaches, and using diverse analytical tools. Our
working definition of ???Chinese-language cinema,???Ewhich is certainly open
to questioning, envisions a language-based cultural phenomenon
characterized not only by shared linguistic traits but by shared cultural
experience as well. Specifically, compared to the familiar conception of
Chinese cinema as something that is geographically defined, the
configuration of a ???Chinese-language cinema,???Ewhile not necessarily
downplaying the significance of the geopolitical dimension of ???national
cinema,???Epriorities cultural and linguistic dimensions in thinking about
an increasingly internationalized Chinese cinema. It also provides
scholars of Chinese cinema a rich and largely uncharted territory of
interests for comparative and parallel studies.
The conference will invite a few representative figures in the field to
serve as keynote speakers. It also warmly welcomes film academicians and
professionals from all over the world to participate in this historical
event. The keynote speeches and presented papers will be published in
book form shortly after the proposed conference. The working languages of
the conference will be Chinese and English. In other words, the
conference will ONLY provide simultaneous translation between Chinese and
English.
