List members may be interested to know that we will be screening two films by Tsuchimoto Noriaki at BFI Southbank in London in the first half of October (before the London Film Festival, which starts on the 15th) - 'An Engineer's Assistant' and 'On the Road'. They are showing in a season programmed by Mark Cousins around his forthcoming book 'Widescreen', which is an assault on the narrowness of UK film culture and an incitement to critics to raise their game:

An Engineer's Assistant and On the Road (both Tsuchimoto, Japan). Most people - even those who know a lot about non-fiction film, would say that America and France in 60s were the place to be as a documentary filmmaker. But these two films by Noriaki Tsuchimoto (who died in June) are so breathtaking, so like Man with a Movie Camera or Night Mail, that they make us revise our opinion. The first, shot on 35mm colour stock, is a portrait of railway workers. It is homoerotic and shows why Japan's work ethic helped it recover from the war. The second, about the work of taxi drivers. is as cinematic as Scorsese's great film of the same name. It's our loss that we don't know these films, but if our critics were more curious, we would.

Thanks Mark and John, that's a great help. I'll adjust the obituary with that information about wives and children. And thanks, John, for forwarding the other query to Siglo.
