Arab-Japan

Hi, Najib,
I'm a bit concerned that no one seems to have responded to you. If you've
got some replies already, please ignore this. Re-reading it, I now think
the question is whether it is legal in Japan ? I'd hope that a 1 minute
illustration in a talk would be covered by artistic comment provisions but,
as other posts make clear, the law doesn't necessarily do what is
reasonable. But is the underlying question whether the rights owners could
be difficult because they are not getting their dues from the sales in Arab
countries that your artist is selling? The one thing I'm sure of is that it
is the law of the national jurisdiction that counts and not a cultural
block. In the fifties, the USSR didn't recognise copyright but its
satellite countries did.
You could always write and say what you intend to do, that you're writing
out of courtesy, and that you believe such usage as an illustration does not
fall within copyright restrictions and you intend to highlight rights
problems in the Arab world. But that you hope you have their blessing.
I can't imagine they'd try and object, and you would have protected
yourself. But if you were promoting or selling his DVDs, you'd have no
legal cover.
Just my view.
Roger
