Ichikawa Jun (1948-2008)

That's very sad news. The delicacy and grace of his films were admirable, and made him something of a modern link to the classical period of Japanese cinema. Still, despite his often deliberately old-fashioned style, he seemed to have so much to say about the modern Japanese experience. He was someone I always hoped I'd meet one day. Alas.
