Yokohama and Yokosuka

Hi Ken

As for films, I've come across two more. One is Kurosawa
Akira's "Tenkoku to Jigoku" which is set in Yokohama's
Koganecho (黄金町). Another one associated with Koganecho is a
documentary based on a series of photographs by Mori Hideo
that took an aging mama-san as their main subject. The title
is "横浜メリー" but I haven't seen it.

As for film programs and events, in Yokohama I think there
have been some scattered series put on by smallish community
art groups. There's been a lot of support for eizo through
Yokohama's Sozo Toshi programs. This year was also the 150th
anniversary of the opening of the port. The ones below are
associated with machi-okoshi projects in the Koganecho,
Wakabacho, and Isezakicho areas:

Cinema Jack and Betty is going to have their second "Koganecho
Eigasa" in September (though the films involved don't
necessarily have any relation to Yokohama). I think they've
done some Yokohama themed things in the past.

There's also this thing: 横浜下町パラダイスまつり*よこはま若
葉町多文化映画祭. http://downtownart.hama1.jp/ If you can
figure out what it is from the website, congratulations! But
you might want to keep and eye on it and see what takes shape.

Zakiza (which closed recently) put on an Isezaki Eigasai a few
months ago, where part of the program was outdoor screening of
1950s newsreels from the Kanagawa Nyusu Eiga Kyokai.

If you wanted to contact someone about ideas for a series, you
might try emailing Jack and Betty - the people who took it
over in 2007 have been trying all kinds of different things.
It sounds like a great idea.

Take care
Justin Jesty
