Nippon sengoshi

Let me add one sentence. The film is rich in irony, but that irony's target is not for me formal in nature.

Dear Roger,

It sounds like a problem with projection not the print. It screened about two summers ago at the NFC and was in widescreen. I've seen mokkyumentari in katakana with the parenthetical fe-ku dokyumentari after it. The two terms have different meanings so there is an obvious conflation there. But I don't think I would call Nippon sengoshi a mockumentary. This might be a question of semantics but I don't see in it a satirical relation to the genre of the documentary, which for me is a definitive quality. Alexandra Juhasz and Jesse Lerner have a very helpful essay at the beginning of their anthology F is for Phony: Fake Documentary and Truth's Undoing. Perhaps you already know of it.

Dear kinejapaners,
I greatly enjoyed seeing Imamura's Nippon sengo shi: Madamu onboro no seikatsu (History of Postwar Japan as told by a Bar Hostess, 1970) at Sheffield Doc/Fest, even though the aspect ratio was inconsistent. It was all shown in standard format, including sections shot in widescreen, so that people looked laterally compressed. I can't see any mention of this by anyone - has it always been like this ?
The print was an english-subtitled Japan Foundation 35mm, which has now been shipped direct to Vienna.

And is there a Japanese word for 'mockumentary' ? - (an english term not invented, according to Wikipedia, until the mid-1980s).

Roger
