Three Shochiku biggies at Pordonone———Markus

http://www.cinetecadelfriuli.org/gcm/giornate/questa_edizione.html

The presentation in this year’s programme offers the work of “Three Shochiku Masters” - Kiyohiko Ushihara (1897-1985), Yasujiro Shimazu (1897-1945) and Hiroshi Shimizu (1903-66) – bringing together the surviving silent films of three artists whose work until now has been little seen in the West. Directors of distinctive style and repertory, the three have in common their creative debt to Hollywood films: Ushihara took great pride in having spent time in the Chaplin studios during the production of The Circus; and his great war epic Shingun (Marching On), a milestone in Japanese production, shows the clear influence of The Big Parade and Wings.
