East Asian Studies closure at the University of Toronto

Disturbing news from the University of Toronto, where the current Dean of Arts and Sciences plans the amalgamation of many independent departments--including East Asian Studies--into a single School of Languages and Literatures. This will entail the relocation of several faculty members from EAS into the Departments of History and Anthropology, among others, effectively demolishing the unified programs in Asian Studies currently in place.

As an alumnus of EAS at U of T (PhD, 1997, Japanese literature), I urge all scholars involved in the study of Asia to voice their concerns about the elimination of this fine department.
