The usual place to check is the annual February 15 Best Ten issue of
Kinema Junpo or Eiga nenkan. Eiren actually puts out the statistics,
but their website does not go back to the 1970s: www.eiren.org. I
noticed Wikipedia has stats for a couple of years: http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E5%B9%B4%E5%BA%A6%E5%88%A5%E6%98%A0%E7%94%BB%E8%88%88%E8%A1%8C%E6%88%90%E7%B8%BE

You can also check out the annual Japanese Film published by UniJapan
for stats in English. Their most recent issues do have that data, but
I don't remember if volumes from the 1970s have that info.
