Kobayashi was also regular member of Naruse's post-war "repertory company" -- often playing key supporting roles and occasional leading ones. And he showed up in films by Ozu, Kurosawa and Ichikawa. In addition, he provided the (memorable) voice of the hero's grandfather in Takahata's Omohide poro poro (Only Yesterday). He will indeed be missed.
