Sorry for the delay in responding. We showed this when Koreeda was at Yale in February. No one brought up the issue of the difference in narration from the Japanese version, but when some voiced displeasure with the English voiceover, Koreeda did stress that it was made with his approval, with some help from Linda Hoagland.

The odd thing about the English version, however, is that it is technically an informal version, in that it was made without the official permission of the rights holder (which is NHK). It is slightly longer than the original, and according to Koreeda treads a little bit more into the sticky issue of the hospital's responsibility than NHK allowed. The NHK original is narrated by Naito Takeshi (who plays the second husband in Maborosi, and also appears in After Life).
