If there’s a cure for the malaise that has long beset Japan’s youth,
it may just be found in this infectious and inspiring film. Based on a
true story that is still unfolding, and alternating between scenes of
hilarity and despair, “We Can’t Change the World” sets out to prove
just the opposite, as long as we take a leap of faith. Rousingly
entertaining and grimly edifying in equal amounts, the film features
impressive location footage in Cambodia, a mature leading role for
pin-up Osamu Mukai, and a four-hankie “performance” by Cambodian Kor
Vuthy that is utterly unforgettable.
In 2005, bored medical student Kota (Mukai) picks up a recruiting
flier for foreign aid volunteers at the post office. “Build a school
for children with a roof over their heads…with a donation of ¥1.5
million,” he reads. On the spur of the moment, he convinces his
buddies Shibayama (Emoto) and Yano (Kubota) that they should raise the
money, and they hook up with pretty-boy party planner Honda
(Matsuzaka), who teaches them the fine art of fundraising while
picking up girls. But when they embark on a life-changing study tour
of Cambodia, they confront far harsher realities than children not
having classrooms to learn in. Overwhelmed by the experience and hit
by a string of misfortunes upon their return, Kota and his friends
must rally around their cause or just call it quits…
Join us for this sneak preview of “We Can’t Change the World,” before
it opens on September 23 in theaters across Japan.
All movie screenings are private, noncommercial events restricted to
FCCJ members and their guests.
