Dear
Kinejapaners,

I’ve just noticed an
interesting piece by Chris Fujiwara on the adaptation of Ozu’s last script,
Daikon to ninjin.
http://www.movingimagesource.us/articles/finished-business-20110209
It goes a long way to
answering the question forming in my head from last week’s Berlinale screenings
– How was it that Daikon to ninjin felt totally like a Shibuya film,
whereas all the other ones felt like the work of whatever scriptwriter was
engaged.
The short
season, of the eight films from the 50s and 60s shown at Tokyo Filmex, are
repeated this week at Berlin Arsenal and later at
 Hong
Kong .  They turned out
to be quite a good vehicle for comparing scriptwriters and they are all
fine-looking prints, many in scope and colour with a parade of famous faces and
names from the period.
