Dall'inizio, alla fine

I just wanted to mention the publication at the end of last year of a
book that contains a couple of very good articles on Japanese film
thinkers. I am biased, of course: they were penned by two of my
graduate students at Yale, Naoki Yamamoto and Ryan Cook. But they can
serve as introductions to some of the interesting thinking done on
cinema in Japan (a topic I am also working on). The book itself is a
stupendous compilation of works that broaden and multiply the
histories of film theory around the globe.

Here is the bibliographic info for the book:

Dall'inizio, alla fine. Theorie del cinema in prospettiva / In the
very beginning, at the very end. Film Theories in Perspective

Edited by Francesco Casetti, Jane Gaines and Valentine Re

Udine: Forum, 2010. ISBN 9788884205988

The two articles are:

Ryan Cook, "A Feeling for Endings: Inagaki Taruho's Miroku as a Memoir
of Cinephilia," pp. 561-570.
Naoki Yamamoto, "Experiencing the World through Cinema: Nagae
Michitaro and the Bergsonian Approach to Film in Wartime Japan," pp.
571-576.
I also have a piece on Gonda Yasunosuke and Japanese film theory.

There's more info about the book on my blog:
