Dear Jan-Christoph,

You might look at Asaba Michiaki's chapters on "Always" and the sequel in his book, Shōwa 30-nendai shugi: Mō seichō shinai Nihon (Gentōsha, 2008). Asaba's doing a broad critique of the Showa nostalgia boom here, analyzing a number of films and popular novels.
