Michael Mc,  You are quite welcome but Michael R's Mainichi site is vastly more informative -- many thanks for that!!  Perhaps too much political should not be read into Saburi's trousers:  he is showing up to a funeral, after all.  As are the other chaps in formal suits.
  Wartime film contexts are complex and trousers are only the merest tip of the iceberg.
