The
Philadelphia Japan Arts Matsuri is a three day film/music benefit festival
being held at the Prince Music Theater in Center City Philadelphia from July
7-9.

All proceeds benefit the Philadelphia-Japan Disaster Relief Fund. 

 

THURSDAY JULY 7

PM : ABRAXAS (Philadelphia premiere of this 2011 Sundance Film Festival
selection concerning a Zen Buddhist monk-turned punk rocker)

PM : NINJA KIDS!!! (Philadelphia premiere of the newest film from Takashi Miike
[AUDITION; ICHI THE KILLER; 13 ASSASSINS])





FRIDAY JULY 8 

The lobby of the Prince will be transformed into a convention-like environment
featuring vendors, music, and Japanese arcade games!



5:00 PM : LIVE FROM TOKYO (Philadelphia premiere of this documentary about
Tokyo's modern underground music scene)

PM : RETRO GAME MASTER (screening of select episodes from this popular tv show
featuring a comedian who is tasked with beating vintage video games)

PM : PHILLY CHIPTUNE SHOWCASE CONCERT featuring Chipocrite + Ro-Bear + DJ
Cutman + Data Parade

AM : YAKUZA WEAPON (Philadelphia premiere of this crazy new action film from
the makers of VERSUS with CAST AND CREW IN ATTENDANCE!!!)

6:00 PM : 8,000 MILES (Philadelphia premiere of this Japanese hip hop comedy)

• Director/Producer/Editor of Otaku Unite!, a documentary on the importation of
Japanese animation to the U.S. and the development of the subsequent fandom (Premiered
2004; released on DVD by Central Park Media in 2006)














• Programmer
"Unknown Japan", a free biannual series of screenings of Japanese films in conjunction with the Japan America Society of Greater
Philadelphia.

• Adjunct professor of Japanese Cinema at Drexel University.

• Executive Director/Co-Progammer, Philadelphia Japan Arts Matsuri

• Operator of Tokyo No Records, a boutique label dedicated to domestic releases
of current throwback Japanese musicians.
