Japanese essay/book query

I recently finished my PhD in media studies and find myself underemployed
with considerable time on my hands. I'm thinking of using some of my spare
time to do some translation of film-related essays and/or books from
Japanese into English, and I have a couple of questions that I'm hoping some
of you may be able to respond to.

1. What texts are in great need of translation? I am aware that Yomota
Inuhiko's _Nihon eiga-shi 100 nen_ has been designated as a book in need of
translation, but the last time I spoke with Yomota-sensei about this
(admittedly almost a decade ago) he said that he had given permission to
translate that book to an Australian researcher. What other works are out
there - both in the public domain and not?

2. What would be the 'issues' involved in engaging in such translation,
particularly in terms of copyright? Is this a can of worms waiting to be
opened, or is there a place for the kind of work I'm considering?
