The Movie Committee is pleased to present this exhilarating new
coming-of-age film, “About the Pink Sky,” the Best Picture award
winner from the “Japanese Eyes” section of the 24th Tokyo
International Film Festival (TIFF), which ran from October 22 – 30 at
Roppongi Hills and other venues around Tokyo. Japanese Eyes has
launched the careers of many promising young directors, and this
year’s choice bodes well for the indie film industry in Japan.

An exceptionally accomplished feature-film debut from Keiichi
Kobayashi, “About the Pink Sky” is a fast-and-fresh comedy-drama with
visual and verbal flare to spare. Shot in beautiful black and white
with a documentary lens and vibrant dialogue that feels improvisatory
(it isn’t), the film carefully skirts the clichés and ennui of many
films depicting Japan’s disaffected youth. “Pink Sky” follows high
schooler Izumi, whose hobby is rating newspaper articles, and her two
best friends through a series of believable misadventures, prompted by
Izumi’s discovery of a wallet stuffed full of money. En route to the
launch of a feel-good newspaper for a local hospital and an unexpected
climax, “Pink Sky’s” characters achieve a rare level of realism that
makes them both buoyant and genuinely moving.

Please join Mr. Kobayashi, producer Hiroshi Harada and the young stars
of the film for a glass of wine and light snacks after the screening
and Q&A, at our Meet the Filmmakers Cocktail Party, from 7:00 - 8:00
pm. The cocktail party is ¥1,260 (incl. tax). Cancellations received
