Awashima Chikage

Sad to hear this.  Awashima-san was still looking pretty good in 2010 -- in Kobayashi's Haru tono tabi.  She was a marvelous in everything I saw her in, not only Ozu and Naruse -- but also in Imai's (inexplicably neglected in the West) Nigorie.

The news reports say that the great actress Awashima Chikage passed away. Not that well known abroad because she often did comedy (though she was great at serious roles as well), she was a force to be missed.

The Japanese Wikipedia article contains a bunch of interesting trivia, such as that Awashima was the model for Tezuka Osamu's Ribon no kishi, or that her younger brother was a Hanna Barbera animator, but I'll wait to see extra proof of that.
