Interesting problem that calls for a footnote. But the suggestion of metteur en scène vs. auteur is pitch perfect. It's not a clean fit, but he is clearly thinking in the language of auteurism and these words all cineastes should know.....but only if they studied some film history. Thus, the footnote!
