Roger,
Chapter 1 is available here for your reference:

Also,on the topic of discrimination,Tadashi Imai's "Hashi No Nai Kawa",based on Sumii's novel of the same title and mentioned in this book, is of great interest.

We haven't mentioned representations of the burakumin. Two
films by Ichikawa Kon deal with this and others make allusions.  There are
also misrepresentations, including Kyūjyūkyū-honme
no kimusume, which conflates the burakumin with the
Ainu.
We also had a long thread on representation on blackness,
a couple of years ago.

But I have a question.  I was discussing Kyūjyūkyū-honme with Ian Neary last year, and he recommended the book 'Racial Representations in
Asia'. Although this has now appeared in a number of US libraries, it still
hasn't appeared in the UK.  The publishers don't have a contents list, only
a very unhelpful blurb, and the author, Yasuko Takezawa has not responded to
emails.
Can
anyone point me to a contents list or review that I could put in front of a UK
librarian, please ?
Roger

Hi Eija,
There is
also Naruse's film Whistling in Kotan, a.k.a A Whistle in My Heart (Kotan no
kuchibue), 1959, about the Ainu. I don't know if it's easy to get
though.

Dear all,

can you
suggest some easy to get films (for ex. on DVD), either
documentaries or
fiction films, on minorities in Japan. Especially
films on Ainu and Okinawans
are sought. These are to be shown on a
Linguapax film series at
IUC.

Thanks,

Eija
