*REAL (Rearu Kanzennaru Kubinagaryu no Hi)*

Japan, 2013 127 minutes In Japanese with English subtitles

It’s been nearly five years since Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s “Tokyo Sonata” took
the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes and went on to win accolades
around the world. His 2012 TV miniseries “Penance”* *reminded us how much
we missed him, and earned the unique honor of being shown at the Venice and
Toronto festivals. “Real” is Kurosawa’s first theatrical feature since
2008, and features two of Japan’s young megastars, Takeru Satoh, coming off
the international hit “Rurouni Kenshin,” and Haruka Ayase, whose many
credits include the blind swordswoman in “Ichi.”
