[KineJapan] Copyright-free images

Dear Roberta,

Are you using stills from DVDs?

While there is no "fair use" per se in Japan, my understanding has been that use of DVD stills in academic works is covered by article 32.1 of the Japanese copyright law (著作権法第32条). The main issue seems to be the formality of a "permission request", i.e., whether or not you need to contact the rights holder to "ask" if you may follow the law.

If anybody else has further thoughts about this, I too would be curious to hear them.
