The most accurate account you may find about that ending is in the scenario
published in July 1964 by Eiga Hyôron.

PS : back in March 2005, Yohida made a conference in NFC about *Escape from
Japan*, where he try to recall the deleted scene. It goes last this, in
Japanese :

「問題のシーンについて、いまも記憶しているのは、精神異常をきたした主人公の青年が、隔離された施設のなかでジャズを歌う。わずかに見える窓の向こうは、アメリカだと信じて、ジャズを歌うのです。音楽を担当した武満徹氏がスコァを書いた、珍しいジャズの曲でしたが、残念ながらもはや聴くことができません。

そして主人公とともに逃避行を続けた、桑野みゆきさんが会いに来て、絶句する。それがラスト・シーンでした。」
