For a big academic conference, the Japan Society of Image Arts and Sciences annual conference is usually at the end of May or the beginning of June.

The problem is that they switch between Tokyo and somewhere else in Japan every year. Since they did it in Tokyo this year, they will probably do it elsewhere next year.

> Dear Everyone
> Part of this will sound like a sob story, which is not at all my intention - so i will begin with the practical request and
> then explain why i'm making this. Are there any conference on film, cultural studies or literature that will be in tokyo from jan-june in 2017- and the longer the better 3-4 or more days. I will tell you why
> Last year i applied for a taiwanese grant to support research on my book on the relation of theory and practice in japanese cinema. they told me to make it a two-year grant. Last year I received one year with a semi-guarantee of renewal if i proved progress. I had a good year and did the report and got three glowing reviews and three enthuasiastic yes votes, but it was still denied by the administration. They have given no reason. (They even said "Oh we have plenty of money, we just decided not to give it to you.")
> I am on sabbatical in the winter-spring of 2017 and planned to spend at least two months in Japan. This was devastating. But one thing i can do is apply for travel funds for a conference. The per diem for tokyo is $283 USD a day and for a three day conference I would get five days of this which would pay for nearly one month's rent in Sakura house.
> Sorry to sound desparate, but I'm trying to piece everything together to make the research stay possible.
> Thank you for listening.
