[KineJapan] Mainichi Film Awards

The Finnish distributor of Umimachi no Diary, when I emailed him about Ayase’s actress award, asks: who are the Mainichi film awards? 

Meaning: how do they select the award winners? Who selects? Why is this relevant in Japan?
