[KineJapan] Mainichi Film Awards

The Mainichi awards are some of the oldest in the business (70 years!), so they do have that aura of authority. Unlike the Japan Academy awards, which are picked by the membership, or the KineJun awards, which are selected by a large number of critics, the Mainichi awards are selected by small committees, which vary depending on the award. Details are here:

One can look over their history to see the trends, but in general the Mainichi tends to be rather middle of the road, rarely making bold or unusual awards. But it can come up with results that differ from other awards.

Since it is backed by the Mainichi, it does get a lot of publicity. I think they have broadcast the awards ceremony on some occasions.

One thing I like about the Mainichi is that, apart from the Japan Academy awards, this is one of the few that has awards for the staff and for animation. The Ofuji Noburo Award is arguably the most prestigious award for animation in Japan.

Perhaps others have a different sense, but that’s mine.
