There are two Kato Tai retrospectives about to appear in Japan right now. The larger one at the Tokyo Film Center has been showing more than 40 works since early July.
The often overlooked Kyoto Bunka Hakubutsukan film series will be doing a much smaller group commemorating the centenary of his birth.
9/2-4 Friday-Sunday afternoon showings of Kato Tai films
There will be a Kato Tai Symposium on this Sunday 9/4 3:30 Panelists include Ikawa Norimichi 井川徳道, Ishihara Akira石原昭, Kitaura Hiroyuki 北浦寛之. No reservations necessary, first come - first seated.

Most famous for his Hibotan series, Kato also did serious films of great power, including my favorite, the hard hitting Otoko no kao ha rirekisho 男の顔は履歴書」1966 about the frictions between Korean and Japanese communities in early postwar Japan. That film will not be shown in the Kyoto series but is available on DVD without subtitles.

The theatre in the Kyoto Bunka Hakubutsukan is very well equipped for projection, sound, and excellent seating. The usual ticket price is 500 yen and free if you view one of their main art exhibitions.
