Dear Kinejapanners

I just wanted to draw the attention of those based in London to two Japanese film events this month.

The first is rather short notice, I'm afraid, it's tomorrow evening.
This is my talk at the Horse Hospital in Russell Square as part of the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies on 'LOST TREASURES OF JAPANESE GENRE FILMMAKING'

Details about booking here: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.miskatonic-2Dlondon.com_events_lost-2Dtreasures-2Dof-2Djapanese-2Dgenre-2Dfilmmaking_&d=DwIFAw&c=clK7kQUTWtAVEOVIgvi0NU5BOUHhpN0H8p7CSfnc_gI&r=e7qMG9KFq7WNnPQWULWHJA&m=LW20nI887PkB4h3apCvjxLEIztwGERp5LQRsFwZKYXI&s=keoCEIJzICiogTajbg_iIaMx5gxZo0NACOtxT1-fYfQ&e=

'In this illustrated talk Jasper Sharp will explore the out reaches of Japanese fantasy cinema, from the embryonic trick films of "The Father of Japanese Film" Shozo Makino through oddball homegrown sub-genres such as the prewar "ghost cat" (bakeneko or kaibyô) films and the ama cycle of sexy pearl diver films such as Girl Divers at Spook Mansion (1959), some long-lost Japanese takes on the movie monsters of Universal Studios, the pink film-horror of directors like Tetsuji Takechi and Kinya Ogawa and much, much more, all peppered with a liberal amount of clips of some truly bizarre titles that remain either unseen or unseeable to modern audiences outside of the country.'
Date/Time
Date(s) - Thu. Feb. 16, 2017
7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Second is 'Japan Now: Explore contemporary writing and culture from Japan', an all-day event at the British Library on Sat 25 Feb 2017.

'Japan Now returns to the British Library with a packed day exploring contemporary writing and culture from this fascinating country.

Alex Kerr, author of Lost Japan, reflects on the beauty and destruction of the Japanese landscape, and leading writers, including Hiromi Kawakami, author of Strange Weather in Tokyo, Masatsugu Ono and Yoko Tawada read from new work, alongside artists who view Japan through the lens of film and photography.

This ticket includes free entry into the Momoko Ando film screening at 18.30, subject to capacity.

Programmed by Modern Culture in partnership with the Japan Foundation and Writers' Centre Norwich and supported by Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation, the Nippon Foundation and the Japan Society.'

The Momoko Ando screening mentioned is the London premiere of 0.5mm, and Momoko Ando will be introducing the film in conversation with myself.
