Dear KineJapanners,

The Foreign Correspondents' Club in Yurakucho is hosting two English-subtitled screenings in April of upcoming Japanese releases: the WWII-set drama Star Sand by Roger Pulvers, and the fact-based Alzheimer’s drama Yaeko’s Hum, from Kiyoshi Sasabe. Both events feature Q&A sessions with the filmmaker and stars.

Since FCCJ is a private club, you must reserve your seats through Screenings Curator Karen Severns: kjs30 at gol.com.

Be sure to reserve at least two days before the screening, as seats are limited.

1)	MONDAY, APRIL 10 at 7:00 pm
STAR SAND (Hoshizuna Monogatari),
Followed by a Q&A with director Roger Pulvers and star Shinnosuke Mitsushima

STAR SAND takes place on a remote Okinawan island in April 1945, far from the combat that will become the biggest single battle ever waged in the Pacific Theater. Sixteen-year-old Hiromi (Lisa Oda) comes upon two men in a cave. One is Takayasu, a Japanese deserter (Mitsushima); the other is an ailing American deserter named Bob. Hiromi helps nurse Bob back to health, and the two men — each with so much to lose if they are discovered — pledge never to commit an act of violence again. All is well until Takayasu’s brother, a fanatical soldier (Takahiro Miura), discovers the trio and vows to kill them all. Eventually, three of the four people in the cave will perish; we do not learn their identities until a modern-day university student in Tokyo reads a diary discovered in the cave in 1958, and goes on a quest to uncover the startling truth.

2)	TUESDAY, APRIL 25 at 7:00 pm
YAEKO’s HUM (Yaeko no hamingu)
Followed by a Q&A with director Kiyoshi Sasabe and stars Takeshi Masu, Yoko Takahashi

YAEKO’S HUM is the fact-based story of an educator who becomes a devoted caregiver when his wife develops early-onset Alzheimer’s. A poignant argument against the outsourcing of care, the film stars Takeshi Masu as the loving husband whose devotion not only enhances Yaeko’s quality of life, but allows her to live long past the disease’s typical survival rate. Yaeko is played by Yoko Takahashi, returning to the screen for her first role in 28 years, playing both younger and older versions of the former music teacher who can no longer remember the lyrics to her favorite songs, but loves to hum them.
