[KineJapan] question abstract animation and meaning/narrative

The only book-length work on Japanese experimental/independent/art animation that I am aware of is Chris Robinson's Japanese Animation: Time Out of Mind (2010), which is less a scholarly study than a personal and poetic meditation on the works of Wada, Mirai and their precursors. It's not big on facts and theories, but the writing style fits the subject pretty well, I think.

Hi Verina!

I have a chapter in the forthcoming Routledge Handbook of Japanese Cinema that deals a bit with abstract Japanese animation. I haven’t heard a release date yet but I expect it will be out sometime later this year.

Outside of a small amount of online coverage (including Jasper’s interview and some of Cathy Munroe Hotes’ blog), there isn’t a lot out there in English I know of. For thinking about abstract animation more broadly I’ve found it helpful to look at work on people like Oskar Fischinger and Len Lye, and visual music in general. When teaching abstract animation in class I usually assign Vivian Sobchack’s essay on “The Line and the Animorph.” There is also some crossover with the more abstract end of experimental film and digital media art.

Best,
Paul
