Toho has been in Hollywood since 1953, when it started banking on the
popularity of Kurosawa, Mizoguchi et al in a dream to break into the
largest market in the world. It didn't happen. But they kept the LA office,
although you'd never know it.
Patrick Frater reports in Variety that Toho just injected the LA office
with $14 million. It's interesting that this is happening just as two
collaborations with Legendary (the subsidiary of Wanda), the upcoming
Godzilla film and *Pokemon Detective Pikachu.* Frater also notes that
they've been linked to Bad Robot's live action remake of *Your Name*. It
sounds like the strategy is to work collaborations with Hollywood involving
characters or whitewashing away the racial and cultural differences through
remakes.
