CFP MLA 2020 Panel Theme LLC Japanese since 1900
Guaranteed Panel
“At the Borders of the Human in Japanese Literature and Culture since 1900”
Following the 2020 MLA Presidential Theme of “Being Human,” the LLC Forum "Japanese since 1900" executive committee invites submissions for proposals for our guaranteed panel: “At the Borders of the Human in Japanese Literature and Culture since 1900.”
Some of the questions to reflect on include, but are not limited to:
· What distinguishes the human from the non-human?
· How can we think productively about the human/animal dichotomy?
· How is human depicted in science fiction, or tales of ghosts, spirits, and other post-human forms?
· What do technological interfaces and digital portals tell us about the borders/limits of human perception?
· What happens to humanity in times of conflict?
· How are “borders” established and maintained in the form of group identity?
Please send 250-word abstract and CV to Kyoko Omori (komori at hamilton.edu <mailto:komori at hamilton.edu>) by March 15, 2019. Presenters must be MLA members.
