Hmm.

I do feel conflicted. Mori has a laudable strength in calling outgroup-think, particularly when it involves persecution of the other.  But I do feel uneasy about Mori’s employmentof Nazi-era analogies.

At Oxford in 2015, Mori gavea long lecture about his ‘A’. In it, he gave a just-so history of the holocaustand said that the treatment of Aum followers in contemporary Japanwas a manifestation of a similar tribal othering. At the end of ‘i’, hewarns, with a filmic quote, that the treatment of people like Mochizuki, andthose she seeks to protect, could escalate to the épuration sauvage inFrance in 1944.

On the one hand, I do feel that holocaust and Nazi history gets too shortshrift in much of Asia and it still needs to be broughtinto popular awareness. On the other hand; I fear that many people’s take-awayfrom such potted comparisons from far away could just lead to other otherings, and that analogies closer to an audience’s experience would obtain greateraccuracy.

To cut away two further limbs, I have also seen more coded comparisons toholocaust history completely fail to get home, and seen ones closer to home totallymisfire. So I don’t have any answer or certainty.

There’s a screening and Q&A of ‘i’ at FCCJ on the 12th(when I’ll still be away).

What a great thing for Mori!  And he barely thinks of himself as a filmmaker (he’s being both modest and wrong there). This must be driving Hara crazy, considering he was deeply disappointed at the dearth of awards for Sennin Disaster. But he really needs to get his running times under control.
By the way, check out the bragging rights numbers at the bottom. They apparently had nearly 300,000 people at various events like the red carpet etc. but only 65,000 tickets to the films. 🤔

Markus, I think you pondered, a while back, why Mori Tatsuya and Hara Kazuo enterred for TIFF rather than Yamagata.Besides timing, another answer might be ¥1,000,000, which Mori has just picked up. http://www.tiff-jp.net/pr/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/20191105_release.pdf

I feel the award has not a little to do with sympathy for Mochizuki Isoko and her causes.
