Eiren announced the industry stats for 2019. Most encouraging was that attendance topped 190 million for the first time in 48 years. The box office also set a new record. Japanese film still beats foreign films 54% to 46% at the box office. The top Japanese films were again mostly anime, with Weathering for You being number one of all films, beating even Frozen II. Toho still dominates, but Toei did not do so badly. The number of screens increased slightly, getting closer to the number (if you equate screens with theaters in the old days) last seen in 1969.
