[KineJapan] 2nd Ōshima Nagisa Prize not awarded

When I read your post, I immediately thought, "That's so Oshima." And then
sure enough, here's the takeaway quote from Sakamoto Ryuichi:
該当者がいなかったことについて、坂本審査員長は「もし大島渚賞などという形で大島渚が権威になるのだったら、それこそ大島渚が最も嫌ったことだろう。だから大島渚に迎合するのは絶対にだめなのだ。そうではなく大島渚を挑発し、批判し、越えていくことこそ最も大島渚賞にふさわしいと言えるのだ。そのような映画にわたしたちは出会いたい」とのコメントを発表した。

Several years ago I was on the jury for Za Koenji, which just took place at
the beginning of the month. My fellow jury members included Adachi Masao,
playwright Sato Makoto, cinematographer Yamazaki Yutaka and the great doc
producer Hashimoto Yoshiko. We spent most of the jury meeting griping about
the selection before us until Adachi gruffly said, "Why do we even have to
give out awards?" And we then had an extraordinarily uncomfortable critique
session at the awards ceremony, as their custom was to have all the
directors stand on stage to receive comments from the jury—which we
dutifully did. I remember Adachi and Yamazaki being particularly tough. But
they could do it with a style and a certain reputation reaching back to the
old days of Nichidai Eiken and VAN.

Wish I had been at PIA to see that Oshima Award announcement!
