Yamada Taichi, one of the greatest screenwriters in Japanese TV history, passed away on the 29th at the age of 89. Yamada studied at Waseda University, where he became good friends with Terayama Shuji, After graduation, he joined the Shochiku studio, and studied under Kinoshita Keisuke. Under Kinoshita's recommendation, he started writing scripts for Kinoshita's TV dramas, and eventually became a freelance scriptwriter. He became a leader of the golden age of Japanese dramas <>of the 70s and 80s, when scriptwriters like Mukoda Kuniko and Kuramoto So reigned over the TV world. His dramas such as Kishibe no arubamu, Fuzuroi no ringotachi, and Otokotachi no tabiji are some of the classics of Japanese TV history. While it is not one of his more famous works, I often show Shatsu no mise (starring Tsuruta Koji and Yachigusa Kaoru) in my TV class and it is excellent. He also wrote screenplays for film (Shonen jidai) and won awards for his novels. For an authoritative study of Yamada's work, you can read Hase Masato's book Haishatachi no sōzōryoku: kyakuhonka Yamada Taichi.
