There’s a posting today on EAJS about a Kinoshita conferencein Milan, at which severalKineJapan members are contributing.
Fortunately, it’s also online but it’s not being recorded. I can’t, at such short notice, rearrangechild-minding for Tuesday but, hopefully, a long-overdue english-language bookon Kinoshita will eventually ensue.

The purpose of the event is to celebrate one of the greatest directors of classical Japanese cinema on the 25th anniversary of his death. The title recalls one of Kinoshita's best-loved films, Yorokobi mo kanashimi mo ikutoshitsuki (Times of Joy and Sorrow, 1957), and indirectly the world of melodramas and comedies for which the filmmaker is known and to which we aim to return, while enhancing the richness of a much broader and more varied cinematic universe.
Indeed, the program reflects, even in the diversity of approaches proposed, both the abundance of the Japanese filmmaker's filmography and the pronounced eclecticism of forms that characterizes it, counterbalanced by a remarkably consistent thematic core that focuses on filial piety, childhood, youth, and above all on kindness and purity of spirit as opposed to authoritarianism, violence, indifference, and greed.
Work languages of the conference: Italian and English
