Dear Markus,
My apologies for this delay in thanking you for your generous praise of our efforts.
Throughout our research there are hints here and there, but no overt political writing. The end of the 1932 diary, after their departure from Berlin, has them travelling back through China, with Kashiko writing down her brief impressions of the experience. That does not feature in our article.
Perhaps Nagamasa’s arrest (based on entirely spurious charges), interrogation and release very shortly before their ‘honeymoon’ voyage began led them to be mindful and so apolitical in their writing.
Subsequent journals written by Kashiko have yet to be explored in detail and perhaps this will encourage further work to be undertaken, not only on those writings but also on the period Nagamasa spent in Manchuria later.
With ‘seasonal’ greetings to both you and all subscribers,
Adrian

This article is fantastic history, answering all sorts of questions I've had over the years. It's a must read.
But one question remains vague, and that's the Kawakita's thoughts about the Shanghai Incident (beyond the impact on their business), the rise of Italian fascism and National Socialism, and the political transformations going on back home.
Did your research provide any hints?
Thank you for this impressive archival dig into Japanese cinema's first major power couple!
Markus

In 2021 a posting here on KineJapan, regarding the 1932 film “Nippon”, led to my ongoing collaboration with Dr Wayne Arnold of the University of Kitakyushu.
Following a presentation in Zurich in September on “Nippon” at the Aesthetics of Early Sound Film Revisited conference I am now pleased to share this link to further ‘fruits’ of our ongoing endeavours.
