It isn't focused on Japan, but my department at the University of Notre Dame (East Asian Languages and Cultures) is advertising a tenure-track assistant professorship in Korean literature and popular culture that may be of interest to some on the list. The committee is particularly looking for candidates who can offer courses on modern fiction, film, and popular culture. Most teaching will focus specifically on Korean topics, but there is also scope for offering comparative courses on film and/or popular culture. Applications are due Sept. 24th through Interfolio<https://apply.interfolio.com/126991>.

Incidentally, this year is a good one for film and media positions at Notre Dame. Other departments on campus are advertising positions for a film director and a video game designer.

Description

The University of Notre Dame invites applications for the tenure-track position of assistant professor in modern (including contemporary) Korean literature and popular culture, beginning August 2024. The position will be based in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures, with possible concurrent appointment in the Department of Film, Television, and Theatre.

Preference will be given to candidates who can offer courses on modern fiction, film, and popular culture. Responsibilities include teaching two undergraduate courses per semester. Most teaching will focus specifically on Korean topics, but there is also scope for offering comparative courses on film and/or popular culture. Native or near-native proficiency in Korean language is expected of all applicants. Active programmatic involvement and close collaboration with our faculty to advance our growing Korean language and culture program are also expected.

As an international Catholic research university, the University of Notre Dame has made a significant commitment to furthering Asian Studies, as evidenced by the founding of the Liu Institute for Asia and Asian Studies in 2011 and the opening of the Keough School of Global Affairs in 2014, both of which have driven increasing demand for Asia-related language and content courses.

Information about Notre Dame is available at https://www.nd.edu<https://www.nd.edu/> . Information about the Program of Korean Language and Culture and the Department can be found at https://eastasian.nd.edu<https://eastasian.nd.edu/>. Inquiries about the search may be directed to the chair of the search committee, Prof Michel Hockx (mhockx at nd.edu<mailto:mhockx at nd.edu>).
