It wasn’t!

While we’re on this, I thought I would remind people that one of the first people to address Ozu’s wartime work was Peter High. He contributed an article to the Kinema Club book In Praise of Film Studies that analyzes an Ozu script for a kokusaku film to be shot in SE Asia. It’s very interesting, especially because he translates all the key passages in the story. If you haven’t read it, please check it out.
