The one-of-a-kind artist Kanai Katsu has passed away. I had heard about it from his family a number of weeks ago (he died on April 22), but only just noticed that the news has hit the newspapers. Kanai-san was a Nichigei graduate who first worked at Daiei before going independent. While making TV documentaries, he also made groundbreaking indie films exploring sexual and ethnic identity such as Mujin retto and Good-Bye (both of which we showed at Yale in 2009 when he visited us). One of my favorite memories was watching his Super Documentary: The Avant-Garde Senjutsu at Yamagata with Ian. Kanai was always a playful (he ways playing with computer images in that work), and the six-year old Ian loved it. And Kanai-san loved that Ian loved it. RIP.
