Dear all,
If you will forgive the shameless self-promotion, my book Pink Auteur, Red Outlaw: Adachi Masao and Japan's Cinema of Revolution is published by Awai Books on September 1.
It is the first critical biography of Adachi. As some of you know, the book has been a labour of love ongoing since 2016 and it is something of a miracle that it is finally published. Over the years, I have received generous support from various people on this mailing list.
Given my background and past publications, I approached the topic more as a cultural historian than a film researcher, and drew on primary sources and secondary scholarship in four languages, plus interviews with Adachi.
Unfortunately, we didn't receive permission to use stills, but the book is wonderfully designed with original illustrations and a fun cover. Publication is somewhat bittersweet, because Adachi himself has misunderstood the book as a kind of hatchet job or attempt to exploit him, which is very much not the case, as I am confident anyone reading in good faith will see. I share this "behind-the-scenes" gossip only because I am aware that several people on this list know Adachi personally. Sadly, I am no longer in contact with him.
An officially endorsed anthology of translations of Adachi is due at the end of the year, so my publication is a more punkish upstart, so to speak. I may venture to say that this is quite in keeping with the spirit of underground cinema.

I'm not done with Adachi quite yet. His early work also features in my PhD dissertation, another long-in-gestation project, but one I hope won't take me ten years to complete.
