Daniel Glaeske would like to see a 'regulated permit' for collecting
butterflies in National Parks. These already exist--but you don't get them
at the Interpretive Center. One has to apply to the Resource Manager at
the Park Headquarters, and you will also have to satisfy a number of con-
ditions (which may vary from park to park). Among these may be the follow-
ing:
All specimens to remain the property of the National Park Service,
regardless of where they are deposited.
Specimens to be deposited in a public institution.
Collecting to be done out of sight of visitors.
Valid research needs for collecting (some parks may require an
actual research proposal).
Compliance with various restrictions for wilderness areas, such
as having to move your remote camp every few days to avoid impact on the
ground cover.
Providing a detailed inventory of all specimens collected, which
could involve a lot of paperwork.
Satisfying the Resource Manager that there will no adverse impact
on population levels from your collecting.
Basically, you don't want to go through all this unless you have
a real need for the material... If you _do_ need the material, then allow
enough time to jump through the various hoops.
