John Calhoun gave a nice account of the origin of Hobomok. Readers
might also want to check out Harry Zirlin's series of columns in
AMERICAN BUTTERFLIES on the naming of butterflies. Why should some
skippers be named after American Indian chiefs while others (duskywings)
were named after Classical figures? Was there an historical conspiracy
or were taxonomists merely enjoying themselves?
