My experience (not very far away, in west Hertfortshire) has been very
similar to Andrew Wood's - Speckled Woods doing better than last year, lots
and lots of Vanessids apart from Red Admirals, some Large Whites.
Do others find that Speckled Woods prefer *tall* undergrowth? There are
three colonies in a nearby wood, all associated with 4-6 foot high
undergrowth with none whatever when the growth is low as in bluebell
patches. Along a disused railway line, where there has been rather
extensive scrub clearance, they seem to have gone extinct. If any of this
is true, it might have conservation implications.
