No, they are not. There is no usenet "gate" of entomo-l postings.

Yes it is, as Usenet is the place e-mail addresses are harvested by
spammers'  "extractor" software.

I guess it's not like the listowner makes regular announcements, so I can
see how folks might not know this. At the very least, I'll mention that I'm
now in a position to help control spam on sci.bio.entomology.lepidoptera
directly, but there's nothing to be done about spam to leps-l.
