October 19, 1997

	Visited 13 overwintering sites with Paul Cherubini to take monarch
population counts and to search for tagged butterflies. We found many of
our own tagged butterflies, but most of them had not moved to other
sites. Here are the estimated populations and tagging data:

Population counts:

1. Nepark Mall Site (Newark) - 500
2. Ardenwood Farm Site (Fremont) - 4,000
3. Marina Golf Course Site (San Leandro) - 20,000
4. Richmond Site (Richmond) - 5,000
5. Muir Beach Site (Marin County) - 7,000
6. Stinson Beach Site (Marin County) - 70,000
7. Purple Gate Site (Bolinas) - 70,000
8. Elm/Grove Site (Bolinas) - 12,000
9. Elm/Maple Site (Bolinas) - 40,000
10. Terrace Site (Bolinas) - 25,000
11. Grove/Alder Site (Bolinas) - 10,000
12. Larch Site (Bolinas) - 25,000
13. Albany Hill (Richmond) - 10,000

Tagging data:

Found L061 at the Richmond Site and was tagged on September 27 at the
Marina Golf Course Site. Traveled 20 miles northwest.
