noms vernaculaires

Pardon my non-French ... 

Given the nature of the human race, I think that any words you wish to 
make them use have to be short and easy to spell. Lep is nice. Papillon 
is lovely. Mariposa is just fine. And I think distinctions between 
butterflies and moths tend to wobble a bit ... look at the whole race of 
skippers, for example. 
People seeking to grow butterflies in their garden are disappointed when 
 a caterpillar decides it wishes to be a moth, as if that were somehow 
of less value. And yet, they feel so proud if they can tell that some 
bug is a butterfly and another one a moth, that they feel they have 
accomplished something. I don't think yuo're going to move them, with 
all your piety and wit. 
I'd like to see mutually acceptable terms chosen, but nothing with more 
than three syllables, maybe four on the outside, is going to sell itself 
to the general public. That's who we work for, n'est pas? 
The purpose of language is to communicate; not to make you look very 
intelligent. We tend to forget that. (Well, if I use long words, they 
think I know what I'm talking about.)
